𖦹
In the spring of 2024, Free Birth Society hosted a rare and potent five-day retreat with the beloved elder and spiritual midwife, Sister MorningStar. Filmed with care and intention, we’ve preserved this sacred experience so you can receive her legendary teachings—no matter where in the world you are. The Midwife Within is a virtual retreat like no other: intimate, evocative, and overflowing with ancestral wisdom. Each day unfolds as a fireside gathering, drawing you into the heart of what it means to remember, to serve, and to embody the midwife within.
Together, we awaken the village midwife who sleeps within each of us—remembering, reclaiming, and carrying this ancestral knowing back into our communities.
𖦹
Every woman deserves access to this timeless wisdom—birth knowledge that was never meant to be forgotten, but passed from woman to woman, generation to generation.
𖦹
We are the village midwives of our time. The torchbearers. The keepers of sacred birth.

What We'll Cover:
Day 1
Session 1: Untaming the Feminine PsycheÂ
In this potent opening session, elder midwife Sister MorningStar leads us into a brave and intimate journey of self-inquiry. Together, we trace the contours of our conditioned psyche—the places we still perform, still say “yes” when every part of us means “no.” With wisdom and fierce compassion, she illuminates where our instincts have been severed, our wildness subdued, and our inner knowing silenced. These, she says, are the sacred thresholds—the very places we must untame if we are to walk the path of the birthkeeper in truth, integrity, and holy devotion.
Session 2:Â A Holistic Look at Blood Loss
We’ll journey into blood loss through a holistic, woman-honoring lens—dispelling cultural fear and restoring trust in what is natural. We’ll explore how to support the mother in welcoming her baby, and witness the profound interconnectedness between blood, placenta, baby, mother, and the sacred choreography that unites them.
Day 2Â
Full Day Session:Â Newborn First Breaths
This immersive full-day workshop illuminates the physiological transition of the newborn, shaped by the instinctive behaviors of the mother. Sister MorningStar will reveal the five essential maternal and newborn behaviors that harmonize to initiate the baby’s first sacred breaths.
The second half of the day delves into special circumstances, hands-on practices, intimate dialogue, and grounded techniques to create a deeply nurturing environment for the newborn during the critical first three days earthside.
Day 3
Session 1: Placenta Magic
Prepare to unlock the sacred mysteries of the placenta. Learn to read the story of how this primal mother formed, birthed, nourished her baby, and how she released with blood in her final offering. Discover the subtle messages held in cord insertion and the revelations found on both the maternal and fetal sides.Â
Session 2:Â An Intimate Look at True Queen/False Queen Ritual and CeremonyÂ
In this ceremonial rite of passage, Sister MorningStar invites us into raw truth-telling with the false selves we’ve carried—the masks we’ve worn to belong, to please, to survive. Shaped by wounding, performance, and fear, these identities are seen, honored, and gently laid down in sacred witness. What emerges is an opening, a rising, an invitation to step into the radiance of our True Queen essence. To reclaim the throne of our inner sovereignty. To be seen, celebrated, and welcomed into our Queendom—by a circle of sister queens who recognize our wholeness and mirror it back with reverence.
Day 4
Session 1:Â An Introduction to The Village PrenatalÂ
Session 2:Â The Village Prenatal (In Action)
Join us as we explore the historical and modern terrain of midwifery—where ancient wisdom meets contemporary challenge. Together, we’ll confront the practical, political, social, and spiritual forces that obstruct the path of true birth keeping, and illuminate the way forward for those called to serve in sovereignty.
Immerse yourself in the sacred art of The Village Prenatal—a beloved ceremony—brought to life by Sister MorningStar. This day is a tapestry of potent birth stories, playful body art, connection with womb-bound babies, and songs offered to the sacred mothers. You’ll witness how reverence, celebration, and community can transform the prenatal experience into a rite of passage. Leave with the wisdom and confidence to host your own Village Prenatals, weaving a circle of care and remembrance for the expectant women in your community. This is how we bring the village back—one mother at a time.
You are the change. The keeper of tradition. The village midwife of our time—called to remember, to serve, and to lead.

"I am a keeper of story. I am a woodland Mystic. A story teller and a preserver of the sacred feminine. I was 12 years old when I started my first wimyn’s study group. It seemed to me that wimyn needed to get together to talk about what was going on in their lives and what was going on in their hearts. It seemed to me, even as a young budding female, that wimyn’s issues were important and that we often died spiritually long before our bodies died. I began to notice how closely the body and mind and soul were interconnected and that healing and peace and happiness came first to the spirit and left there first as well. That the body followed where the spirit led. I noticed also that wimyn in isolation were trapped, scared, sad, depressed and hopeless not so much in their outer circumstances but within. All that seemed to change when they could be with other wimyn and begin to talk openly."
